Sandy Hook Lighthouse

The Sandy Hook Light is the oldest continuously operating lighthouse in the United States. The lighthouse has a long history since first being lit on June 11, 1764. The colony of New York built the lighthouse in order to aid ships sailing to and from New York Harbor.[1] The entire structure stands at 103 feet tall and has a base diameter of 29 feet that tapers to 15 feet at the top of the wall. The iron lantern house that sits on top of the base is 7 feet tall and has a 33 foot circumference.[2] Adjacent to the lighthouse is the Lighthouse Keepers Quarters which was built in 1883 and “is the fifth such quarters built on [the] site."[3] The building is currently used by the National Park Service as the Sandy Hook Visitor Center.

Below are some photos I took of the lighthouse in early September.
